The purpose of the Computing department is to equip all girls to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing links Science, Maths and creative subjects to provide inspiring insights into both natural and artificial systems.

The core of Computing is Computer Science, in which pupils are taught the principles of computer systems, how digital technology works, and how to practically apply this knowledge by programming. Pupils are no longer simply users of technology; instead they are creators and innovators!

Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate - able to use devices, express themselves and develop their ideas with technology at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in an increasingly digital world.

By its very nature, Computing is an ever changing subject. At The Marist, we aim to mirror this through the delivery of an inspiring and thorough curriculum, both in and out of the classroom.

Aims of the Department

The aims of the Computing Department are to:

  • Equip all girls with understanding and application of the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science and computational thinking skills. These include: abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
  • Ensure all girls can analyse problems in computational terms and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to efficiently solve such problems independently.
  • Enable all girls to evaluate and apply digital skills including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically, to solve problems.

Computer Science GCSE

The opportunity to study a GCSE in Computer Science during twilight sessions will be available from September 2018.

From September 2019 onwards, a GCSE will be offered during curriculum time as part of the options process.


The Computing department plan to offer a wide range of enrichment activities and clubs. These range from holiday courses to international residential trips. Further details will be circulated to parents and pupils in due course.
