Ocean Oarsmen – Aim Higher Assembly
The Marist School Aim Higher Assembly – Ocean Oarsmen
On 13 June we were very lucky to welcome two Maidenhead rowers, Ben and Henry, who delivered an inspiring Aim Higher Assembly to our Prep and Senior students.
They shared details of the the upcoming challenge they face on December 12: rowing 3000 miles unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, from La Gomera to Antigua, in what is recognised as ‘The World’s Toughest Row’.
This is no ordinary challenge, it’s a test of physical and mental endurance. They’ll battle towering 20ft waves, extreme exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and the demanding task of completing over 1.5 million rowing strokes during their 50-days at sea.
Ben and Henry provided an insightful overview of the extensive preparation involved, including survival training, radio communication, CPR, and other essential skills necessary for such a mission. They spoke openly about the excitement and concerns they face, including challenges such as sea sickness and high temperatures.
We were privileged to see Pegasus, the boat they will be rowing, with some students having the opportunity to explore the compact cabins where Ben and Henry will sleep.
Beyond personal achievement, their endeavour aims to raise £50,000 for Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice in Maidenhead, an organisation that supports children with life-limiting conditions and their families. It’s a powerful cause close to their hearts, and your support will mean a great deal.
A challenge like this cannot be done alone, and they are relying on donations and sponsors to support this mission.
