Sports

Sport plays a key part in the development of our pupils.

Our sports facilities and outdoor site provide our pupils with the environment to excel. We have a purpose-built Sports Centre which hosts full-sized netball and basketball courts and four badminton courts. Upstairs, in our state-of-the-art fitness suite, we have a range of cardiovascular training machines which pupils are invited to use from Year 9 in lesson time and in their free time from Year 10. We also have a purpose-built classroom, which is used for all GCSE and A Level PE lessons.

Outside, we have four newly resurfaced netball courts which convert into tennis courts in the Summer term. Our astroturf, which is situated alongside our fabulous school woodlands, gives us the space to deliver KS3 hockey lessons.

We have a 22m indoor heated swimming pool with changing facilities, which lies adjacent to the Sports Centre and is used for swimming lessons for all pupils. We also facilitate co-curricular swim clubs at KS3 & KS4.

Our wonderful woodlands provide us with a fantastic space for cross-country and orienteering which are enjoyed as part of our KS3 curriculum.

The Sports Department consists of an experienced and dynamic team of staff who are committed to the successful delivery of PE and Sport. We employ specialist external coaches to deliver some aspects of our programme and all PE staff teach cross phase.

We promote enjoyment and participation for life, as well as developing pupil’s fundamental movement skills. Teamwork, leadership, and good conduct are at the core of our programme. Through our sporting programme, we enable many pupils to achieve success at County, Regional and National level in a range of sports. As well as the importance of adopting a healthy active lifestyle and developing a love of sport for life, the main aim of our lessons is for our pupils to enjoy their learning and develop a passion for activity.

The PE curriculum on offer is wide and varied in its content, including Games, Dance, Gymnastics, Swimming, outdoor education and Athletics, delivered by qualified specialists.

Pupils compete with local schools in cricket, football, hockey, netball, swimming, rounders, athletics, and handball, and we have a strong history of reaching County, Regional and National finals in a range of areas. We recognise that this success comes from the fact that at all levels, every pupil who attends co-curricular sporting clubs is given the opportunity to represent the school in local fixtures and tournaments. From this wide base of the participation pyramid, we enable excellence to be achieved.

We offer GCSE and A level PE courses and have a strong history of academic excellence, with pupils often surpassing target grades and progressing to university to study courses such as Sports and Exercise Science, Human Bioscience, Sport and Exercise Coaching, and Sports Technology.

Some of our recent sporting achievements include:

U16 National Schools Netball Cup Finalists – 7th place
U14 County Cup Football semi-finalists
Year 7 hockey plate runners up
Year 11 Berkshire Schools Hockey – 3rd place in cup
